01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Choosing a caramel paste is about more than sweetness: the degree to which the sugar is caramelised matters, too. At CARAMELIFE in Jiyugaoka, both the Basic and Butter ranges come in 5 levels, from Sweet to Extra Bitter. If you are trying them for the first time, Medium offers a pleasing balance of sweetness and bitterness.
One customer who bought Basic Medium says they enjoyed it straight from the jar, as well as drizzled over cake, ice cream and mascarpone. The menu describes Sweet as having a condensed-milk-like richness and pairing well with fresh fruit. For Bitter, it suggests serving the paste over sweet vanilla ice cream. Beyond spreading it on bread, you can also add a little of the bitter variety to savoury dishes for extra depth, making it possible to choose a paste for desserts or everyday cooking.
The range centres on caramel paste in jars, with other options including fruit and spice varieties, so there are choices for both home use and gifts. There is no dine-in service, but takeaway and delivery are available. It is a place to pick up caramel in Jiyugaoka and choose a sweetness and style that suit the way you plan to use it.
